On January 10, 2025, I attended a LinkedIn workshop organised by the Biotechnology Club, Universiti Malaya. In this blog, I’ll share some key takeaways from the event. Enjoy the reading! 

Disclaimer:
I created my LinkedIn account during my first year of university (2021/2022). Now, in my final year (4th year), I still consider myself a newbie on this platform, as I’ve never posted anything since creating the account. So, anyone with meπŸ‘€? hahaha dont worry guys, as the said, nothing is too late to begin.

Let’s dive into the main topic.

What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn was actually introduced way earlier in 2003, however it only gain the popularity on 2018 as a platform of Job seeking. As mentioned during the workshop, some major companies now check your LinkedIn profile before even asking for a resume. Believe it or not, LinkedIn is becoming a powerful tool that replacing a traditional methods of job hunting.

Why LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a professional platform where you can showcase your personal brand. As people often say, it’s a place to “sell yourself” professionally. While platforms like Instagram and Facebook are for sharing personal life updates, LinkedIn is where you share your career journey and professional experiences.

Tips and Advice from the Speakers

1st Speaker: Ts. Dr. Wan
LinkedIn Headlines
  • Avoid using generic logos (e.g., “Ready to Work”). Instead, focus on:
    • Job hunting
    • Professional networking
    • Skill development
    • Personal branding
    • Career exploration

For Researchers

  • Use LinkedIn for networking and finding grants.
  • Build a strong profile because “People Buy From People They Trust.”
  • Avoid using AI for profile writing; write it yourself to maintain authenticity.

What to Build in 2025:

  1. Earn people’s trust.
  2. Exhibit a positive and professional attitude.
  3. Treat others with respect to gain respect.
  4. Expand your network.
  5. Avoid confining yourself to closed groups.
  6. Do not display hatred or negativity towards others.
  7. Most importantly: JUST DO IT!!!

1. Build Connections
Building connections means actively engaging with people in your field or areas of interest on LinkedIn. This involves:
  • Sending personalised connection requests to colleagues, industry professionals, or alumni.
  • Participating in LinkedIn groups related to your industry or research.
  • Maintaining relationships by interacting with posts, congratulating connections on their achievements, and sharing insights.

2. Master your Skills

Mastering your skills involves consistently improving your expertise and showcasing it on LinkedIn. To achieve this:

  • Highlight your achievements and projects, such as your final year project (FYP) or certifications, in your LinkedIn profile.
  • Engage with professional content that aligns with your interests, such as webinars, workshops, and articles.
  • Regularly update your skills section to reflect your most relevant abilities, like PCR techniques, bioinformatics, or scientific writing.

3. Networking

Networking effectively is about fostering meaningful relationships with your connections, rather than just adding people to your list. Effective networking includes:

  • Attending events, webinars, or workshops (like the LinkedIn workshop) and engaging with speakers or attendees.
  • Sharing your experiences and insights through thoughtful LinkedIn posts, which can attract like-minded individuals.
  • Collaborating with peers and professionals by discussing mutual goals or projects, such as research or internships.

What is Personal Branding?
  • It’s about building your online and offline reputation.
  • It’s not about how famous you are, but how you present yourself authentically.

How to Create a Trending Post on LinkedIn?

  • Share your own genuine stories.
  • Write posts yourself (you can use tools like ChatGPT for grammar checks).
  • Discuss common, engaging topics.

  • Academic achievements (e.g., FYP, workshops, results).
  • Personal stories.
  • Language skills.
  • Career opportunities.
  • LinkedIn tips and tricks.
  • Financial insights.

Do's and Don'ts

Do:

  • Be professional. ✅
  • Be polite. ✅
  • Interact with your connections. ✅
  • Build your network. ✅
  • Engage with the LinkedIn community. ✅

Don’t:

  • Be rude. ❌
  • Overshare personal activities. ❌
  • Include irrelevant personal content. ❌

How to Interact on LinkedIn

  • Tag people in your posts.
  • Share posts from others.
  • React to and comment on other users’ posts.
